ICANN Expected to OK .travel
According to reports, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (icann.org) has entered into negotiations with Tralliance Corporation for administrative control over the .travel sponsored top-level domain. Tralliance, based in New York, is an organization developed to enhance online commerce between travelers and the travel and tourism industries.
The .travel domain, designed to serve the global travel and tourism community,
is expected to launch in 2005 after negotiations between ICANN and Tralliance
are complete. If approved, it would be the seventh sponsored top-level domain.

ICANN's decision however, could raise problems with the 175 million users who use New.net (new.net) software to resolve domain names on their Web browsers, according to a report by Internetnews.com.
New.net, established in 2001, offers shortcuts to names like .travel, .shop, .xxx and 25 other "alternative" domain name extensions not assigned by ICANN. The shortcuts are scripts installed on a computer or in the DNS servers of participating Internet service providers. When a user types in a Web address with the alternative .travel extension, the script takes the person to .travel.new.net, the registry service for the alternative domain names.
New.net says its shortcut services were designed to overcome ICANN's slow TLD
approval process.
