ICANN Sees Ten New TLD Applications
March 23, 2004 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN.org) announced last week that it has received a total of 10 applications for nine proposed top-level domains (TLD). The proposed TLDs are .asia, .cat, .jobs, .mail, .mobi, .post, .tel, .travel, and .xxx. They would be sponsored by the organizations that have submitted applications.
While ICANN oversees a number of unsponsored domains, certain TLDs are sponsored by organizations that represent the narrower community that is most affected by the TLD. The sponsor carries out delegated policy-formulation responsibilities over many matters concerning the TLD.
Two organizations, pulver.com and Telname Limited, have submitted applications for the .tel domain. Pulver is a New York-based voiceover IP (VoIP) company and Telname is a UK organization established for the purpose of sponsoring the proposed .tel domain.
An organization called The International Foundation for Online Responsibility (IFOR) applied to sponsor the .xxx domain. In its application, IFOR said an .xxx domain would help control the spread of adult content to children. IFOR is based in Toronto, Canada.
A total of ten applications were submitted as part of a process requesting proposals initiated by ICANN on December 15, 2003. The deadline passed last week and applications will be reviewed by an independent evaluation panel beginning in May 2004. Final decisions will be announced in the summer.
