Industry Leaders Propose Top-Level Domain for Mobile Web Sites
Several leading companies from the mobile industry -- Including Microsoft, HP, and Nokia -- are going to request that a Top Level Domain (TLD) be created for web sites that are intended for handhelds and smart phones.
This group hopes a mobile TLD will create business opportunities for companies servicing mobile customers. It also hopes it will spur the development of compelling new mobile services and applications. According to a statement from the group, their aim is the simplification of the Internet experience for mobile subscribers and increasing the ease of use and speed of delivery of mobile Internet services.
A spokesperson for Vodafone, one of the companies making this proposal, said, "The aim of the initiative is to accelerate the rollout of Internet products and services specifically designed for mobile devices as well as to ensure far greater operating simplicity for mobile subscribers across the globe."
The application is going to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), who will make the decision on whether to create the new TLD. Several possible names have been proposed, and it is up to ICANN to choose the one it prefers.
How Would It Work?
The participating companies are Microsoft Corp., Nokia, Vodafone, 3, GSM Association,
HP, Orange, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Sun Microsystems. They intend to
form a registry company to manage the distribution of the new mobile TLD names.
The mobile TLD would be designed to enable efficient application and network services and reliability for mobile customers and service providers.
The registry company will seek the participation of additional members to ensure broad customer and industry input.

What's a TLD?
A Top Level Domain (TLD), such as ".com," ".gov," ".org,"
and so on, is used for Internet addressing. The mobile TLD would indicate that
the address is a site that is optimized for mobile usage according to the parameters
set forth by the domain itself.
