FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It lets you connect to a remote computer, such as a hosting server in another state. Then you can move files from your machine to the remote one and create folders for those files on that computer. Depending on the hosting server, FTP may also allow you to alter the permissions for files on the remote machine, thereby controlling who can access or modify them. You may find that it is easier to organize similar files into folders, rather than having to sort through hundreds of pictures and HTML documents every time you want to make a change. That way if you need to update a picture you know it will be in your images directory.
